Rio’s Piri Piri Alum Rock is a casual fast food spot that locals turn to when craving bold, saucy chicken dishes with a distinctive peri peri twist. Nestled right on Alum Rock Road, this place feels like a no-nonsense hangout where the focus is firmly on flavourful, hearty chicken meals rather than elaborate dining. It’s the kind of takeaway joint where you can drop by for a quick, satisfying meal or grab dinner to share at home with friends or family.

The menu leans heavily on grilled and fried chicken options, with standout mentions like BBQ Wings and Peri Peri Chicken Wings often talked about by regulars. Burgers here come with generous portions and a distinctive tangy sauce that gives them a local edge compared to standard fast food options. Pairing these with seasoned fries or a full chicken meal feels like the go-to combo, especially on busy weekday evenings when the aroma wafts through the neighbourhood and draws in regulars after work or school.

The atmosphere inside is straightforward and functional, fitting its fast-paced takeaway vibe more than sit-down elegance. It’s not a place to linger with a coffee, but rather somewhere that delivers solid, flavour-packed food efficiently. The staff’s friendliness comes through in small touches—like throwing in an extra item for a loyal customer—which adds a layer of warmth amid the quick-service setting.

This spot is ideal if you’re local to Birmingham’s Alum Rock area and want a relatively quick, flavour-forward chicken fix with sauces that stand out – especially if you like your chicken with spice and a bit of a kick. The best time to visit is likely early evening, when hot food is freshest, or during a casual weekend gathering when lighter crowds mean quicker service. Expect a straightforward, down-to-earth experience focused on delivering tasty, well-seasoned chicken without fuss.

Thought I would try the alum rock rio see if it's good. The burger was good, But the BBQ Wings were on point. Uncle dropped a extra strip in the bag, lovely. Some pictures to go with it. Thanks

The food is really quite good. I think the flavours are pretty unique and the sauce in the burger has a great tang to it you can't really get anywhere else. The seasoned fries are great too and most importantly this place understands the importance of great sauces. The white and orange sauce are the best I've ever gotten anywhere and blows all other sauces out of the water. Given that, the girl at the till was completely lifeless and for some reason they don't do the Mexicana burger despite showing it on their menu. The other reviews also suggest there's a consistency and attitude problem though I only come here infrequently. It's too bad a great product is being ruined by things like this. The cost was fine, about £8 for a rodeo burger and large fries (the portion of which was indeed quite large).

Current: Ordered recently and had a Frango meal for myself, was looking forward to it but the chicken was ever so tough, lacked moisture and was therefore not as enjoyable to eat, the flavour was there, but the chicken had been overcooked and thus dried out, hoping this was a one off, hence not giving 5 stars, yet. Previous: Ordered from this store when it first launched and wasn't blown away or even wow'd...many years on it is definitely one of the better place for the type of food it offers. MILES better than Pepe's and they read the instructions on the receipt (whomever the manager is KEEP IT UP) I've since ordered again. If this keeps up and nothing gets missed from orders then I will be back to update to 5 stars. For those wondering what I got, it was the Macho burger with BBQ sauce and smothered in tantalising extreme flavoured sauce . #GoGetYouSome
